Whom Are We Serving?
It may be the devil or it may be the LORD; but you have to serve somebody!
Romans 6:1–16 (NKJV) – Brief Overview
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
If you were born early enough, you may recall the song by Bob Dylan from 1979, “Gotta Serve Somebody.” Many people proclaim their salvation in Christ; however, we have discovered that many continue to live their lives as they did before—except perhaps attending church occasionally.
Our salvation through Christ is meant to be more than just an overhaul. It is meant to transform us into completely different people who desire God’s will as our new perspective on life.
The Apostle Paul reminded the Romans that all of God’s children are called to be servants (slaves) of God. Our salvation cost God everything through Jesus Christ, and the Messiah sacrificed all for humanity. God desires the same surrender from each of His children.
Our purpose as children of God is to become more like our Savior.
Romans 8:29 – “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…”
This is our calling, our purpose, and our identity. Praise God—we do not have to become something on our own. We simply reflect Christ.
One Baptism – A Spiritual Reality
There is only one true baptism, followed by the outward ritual of water baptism, which symbolizes what has occurred spiritually.
Ephesians 4:4–6 teaches:
“There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all…”
These verses emphasize that all believers are part of one body, sharing one faith and one baptism. Baptism serves as a public declaration of faith, while spiritual baptism is accomplished by the Holy Spirit.
Dying to the Old Nature
As we enter through the gates of faith in the Lord and His Word, God calls us to die to our old nature as we work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).
Are we willing to yield everything to become who Christ wants us to be? For many, transformation occurs through trials and suffering.
Romans 6:5–11 reminds us that our old self was crucified with Christ, freeing us from slavery to sin and calling us to live a resurrected life through Him.
Who Are We Truly Serving?
If we focus solely on ourselves, we often end up serving the enemy, even without realizing it. Self-focus feels natural, which is why spiritual change requires death to self. The only sufficient death is the one Jesus accomplished on the cross.
Now, our responsibility is to trust the Good News—that Jesus paid for all our sins: past, present, and future. Hallelujah!
We must choose to “put on the new man,” refusing to remain slaves to ourselves. This transformation flows from our determination to align ourselves with Christ. Without faith and trust, we lack the strength to apply God’s promises.
Romans 6:12–14 reminds us not to let sin reign in our bodies, but to present ourselves as instruments of righteousness under grace.
Choosing Who Leads Our Lives
We must daily choose—by faith—to reject sin. The question becomes:
Do we want to control our lives, or do we trust God to lead us toward what is best?
Jesus is alive and active to protect and guide us. We do not need to surrender to our emotions or desires as the world often encourages.
Romans 6:15–16 teaches that we become slaves to whatever we obey—either sin leading to death or obedience leading to righteousness.
Grace Over Law
God’s Law is perfect. The Law exists to identify sin and reveal lawlessness. If believers remained under the Law, they would inevitably fail to keep it perfectly.
Through Christ, we receive His righteousness. Therefore, we do not serve out of obligation but from love and gratitudefor His mercy and grace. Our hearts are transformed to desire pleasing Him.
So again we ask:
Who are you serving?
It may be the devil or the LORD—but everyone serves somebody. God calls His children to serve Him.
Ministry Update
Dear friends and saints,
Our Father continues to faithfully care for our needs. Though we have little materially, He consistently provides for our expenses and daily necessities. We currently have 5–10 faithful donors supporting this ministry, allowing us to serve those seeking biblical counsel. Praise the Lord for His sustaining provision!
Since January, we have completed approximately 23 counseling intakes, including:
Marriage counseling
Premarital counseling
Singles counseling
Memorial services
Upcoming weddings
We anticipate a very busy year ahead and remain humbled to serve through God’s grace and wisdom.
Rocky Mountain Calvary Partnership
Toward the end of 2025, Neil began serving at Rocky Mountain Calvary as a pastor one day per week. This has been a tremendous blessing, providing office space for counseling and opportunities to assist their ministry. We truly feel at home among many familiar brothers and sisters there.
Expanding Ministry Reach
Struggles exist in every church, and we remain committed to supporting churches throughout Colorado Springs. We are often amazed to connect with counselees via Zoom from other cities, states, and even countries.
Praise God for using modern technology—His “power of the air”—to expand His work!
Family & Fellowship
Outside counseling, we enjoy:
Mentoring relationships
Bible study and prayer groups
Spending time with our 11 beautiful grandchildren
Robin continues to enjoy bowling (and improving greatly!)
Learning dance steps from our son (a miracle considering Neil’s two left feet!)
Growing spiritually through Pastor Eric’s teaching at RMC
Financial Update
We continue offering this ministry to the Lord, trusting Him to provide through supporters who believe in this work.
Our goal is approximately $4,000 per month in support. While this feels like a miracle from our perspective, we trust God to meet these needs. Supporting this ministry means investing in the lives of many seeking godly counsel.
We are deeply thankful for our monthly supporters over the past year. Your generosity humbles us.
If you feel led to give—monthly or one-time—every gift helps sustain this ministry. We believe God continues to call us forward.
Counsel Training
The Women’s Ministry at Rocky Mountain Calvary is currently studying:
“Instruments in the Hands of the Redeemer” by Paul Tripp
If interested, please contact Rocky Mountain Calvary for details.
We continue to covet your prayers for wisdom and for those seeking counsel to hear clearly from God’s Word.

1. Ministry Referrals
