God’s New Graces Every Morning
Jeremiah 23:1–4 & Ezekiel 34:1–4
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!” says the LORD.
2 Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people:
“You have scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,” says the LORD.
3 “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
4 I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the LORD. — Jer. 23:1–4
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds:
“Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks?
3 You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock.
4 The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them.” — Ezek. 34:1–4
Application
Jeremiah 23:1–4 and Ezekiel 34:1–4 give similar warnings to those who claim to be shepherds but are not fulfilling God’s requirements based on their role and responsibility. We can expect this more and more in these days—even in local churches—for the return of Messiah comes soon. Yes, we must pray for pastors who are falling away because they are not heeding God’s Word.
Yet this also applies to every child of God who is saved to be an ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ. Before we judge those who are falling away or failing in their positions, we must also look into the mirror of our own failures. God has called us all to be ready to minister to all.
Jeremiah 22:3 reminds us:
“Thus says the LORD: ‘Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.’”
The truth is, the Lord Jesus is returning very soon! I felt the conviction of wanting to make sure that I, too, am ready to offer love and compassion to all those whom the Lord allows me to encounter (see Isaiah 58:6–9). For we are not “of this world,” and the Lord Jesus Messiah is clearly coming soon.
Jeremiah 23:5–6 points us forward:
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
All will be judged according to the motives and intents of their hearts; yet those in Christ have God’s payment—by grace through faith—to stand before the Bema Seat to receive our crown, after our works are examined by fire.
Are we ready? Are we living for ourselves, or for the One who has given His children the Holy Spirit to direct our lives? These are questions I contemplate more and more.
Ministry Updates
We are so blessed to engage with those we meet through this Counseling Ministry. Our days and weeks have been full with many appointments each month. God is growing us through His Word and by His presence. We appreciate your prayers and support.
We recognize that what we are doing in this ministry is a privilege—walking down the same roads others walk, sharing in struggles, trials, and challenges in a world full of sorrow. Jesus Himself walked these roads, leading the world to seek the LORD, for without Him we are hopeless. Yet, we have a Shepherd who points us in the right direction as we walk the narrow road in a fallen world.
Yes, this ministry is a privilege, and Jesus walks with us.
We also believe all Christians should be a part of a body of believers, for we need one another. None of us are meant to walk alone. We’re blessed to have many friends in many churches. Recently, we joined the Mentor Ministry through RMC Church and have been so impressed with how organized and effective this ministry is. Pastor James, along with Paul & Alisa, lead this discipleship ministry with excellence. Each mentor couple is assigned at least one couple to walk alongside for a year. We feel privileged to be part of this, learning from others in the body of Christ.
We’re preparing for our 3rd Module of Biblical Counsel Training. Please pray for the students involved as they faithfully attend. God is working uniquely in each one. Our next module, Theology, is presented by video series with Heath Lambert (former ACBC leader). It is so important to understand how God wants us to depend upon His Word—sharing it with truth in love—and then watching Him change lives!
Please consider helping spread the word about this ministry to those going through life struggles. Word of mouth is often the best way to connect people with Biblical Counsel offered freely, since the LORD has paid the price. We are so thankful for your financial support and especially your prayers. If you’d like to receive business cards to share with others, let us know—we’d gladly send them.
We also look forward to the Annual ACBC Conference via Zoom in October. It is always a refreshing “drink of water” with its workshops and trainer insights. If you’d like to help support student fees for this video conference, please let us know.
Prayer Requests
Praise for Provision – God has answered our prayers with an extra printer for our office! We praise Him for providing what we need at this time. Eventually, we hope to get a full-size copy machine to keep up with “Hope Work” assignments, articles, and training resources. His gifts and timing are always perfect. 😊
Spreading the Word – We continue seeking new ways to reach those needing counsel. We use Facebook to share devotions and topical helps for living in a fallen world. God’s wisdom is timeless, and we desire to connect others with His heart. Please pray for fruitful outreach.
Prayers for the Sick and Aging – Through our prayer group, we regularly lift up many walking through serious physical trials. Please pray for God’s will, mercy, and healing. For the saints, we long to finish well. Praise God who hears all prayers!
Families in Crisis – Pray for the many families we counsel. Pray for God’s wisdom for us, for yielded hearts among counselees, and for His victory and hope to be embraced in their lives.
